POMCO Group Designated as Fit-Friendly Worksite by AHA

Syracuse, NY – August 21, 2014 – POMCO Group, one of the nation’s largest third party benefits administrators, has been designated by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a Fit-Friendly Worksite of gold-level distinction due to the efforts of their POMGO! wellness program. The POMGo! program is managed by a voluntary team of wellness-minded employees across the organization. POMCO Group was one of 19 Syracuse-area organizations recognized by the AHA for their efforts in developing internal wellness and health programs for employees. According to the AHA, Fit-Friendly Worksites reach gold-level status by implementing various activities and programs to encourage nutrition, physical activity, and culture enhancements to sustain a healthy atmosphere.

Over the past three years, POMCO Group has taken several steps toward creating a culture of wellness for employees. Initiatives have included the installation of vending machines with healthy food options, on-site biometric screenings and flu shot clinics, on-site fitness courses such as Yoga, Zumba and meditation, corporate team participation in local run/walk events, and disease management nurse coaching. Some of the most impactful events sponsored by the POMGo! program have been fitness competitions that motivate teams of employees to compete against one another in specific wellness challenges such as team weight loss or minutes of exercise accumulated over the competition period.

“Our fitness competitions have been extremely successful and we have really seen a culture of wellness develop over the past couple of years,” said Erica Doherty, director of human resources and POMGo! team leader. “Our employees are brought together during our six to eight week competition period, which is about the amount of time someone could expect to see change in the body.  More importantly, the real benefits are the long-term improvements in healthy behavior that remain with the employees long after the competitions have ended.”

Since implementing the POMGo! wellness program, POMCO Group has seen not only an improvement in individual employee wellness behavior but reduced absenteeism and reduced medical claim costs. According to Doherty, POMCO Group is looking to expand its current programs in its attempt at further improving the overall health and wellness of their employees.
